The Centre for Media Monitoring has submitted written evidence to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Religion in the Media for their Inquiry into Religious Literacy
Our submission draws on our extensive expertise in media monitoring, and makes reference to our research into media misrepresentation of Muslims and Islam.
It is clear from our studies that many cases of media misrepresentation occur due to a lack of awareness of different faiths and cultures that exists within the journalism profession.
However, we have also seen some publications wilfully misleading the public by persistently publishing inaccuracies.
Our submission highlights the dangers of both cases, and show how religious illiteracy can unintentionally feed into the more sinister narratives by unwittingly circulating tropes and stereotypes.
